Proposed St. Thomas More – Baldwin Academy, Toronto

The Hon. Robert Baldwin
St. Thomas More

Education is not the piling on of learning, information, data, facts, skills, or abilities - that's training or instruction – but is rather making visible what is hidden as a seed.”
- St. Thomas More, Martyr

- The Hon. Robert Baldwin, First Co-Premier of Canada

The proposed STM Baldwin Academy aims to focus on Blessed John Henry Newman’s ideal of instructing youth in a pastoral Catholic atmosphere of active faith and worship with the purpose of nurturing theological understanding through all disciplines including music, art, science, literature and physical education.

The purpose of the programme is two-fold:

+  First, to offer a classical curriculum to help parents with the spiritual, intellectual and physical formation of their children.

+  Second, to offer each student the opportunity to participate in an excellent choral programme.

This is a model which involves homeschooling parents coming together on certain days each week in for a programme focused on music, art, social and cultural activity in a prayerful Catholic context. This model has already proven very successful at St. John’s Ordinariate Parish, Calgary.

Information about the Sacred Heart Choir School at St. John’s, Calgary may be found at: http://calgaryordinariate.weebly.com/choir-school.html

We are looking for families interested in pursuing the formation of the St. Thomas More Baldwin Academy in a similar fashion under the following general guidelines:
1.  Homeschooling parents interested in having their children share in a programme delivered in a Catholic context who would commit themselves and their children to:

a)   One or two days per week at STM/Sacré-Coeur Church, Carlton St.
at Sherbourne e.g. Tuesday and/or Thursday.

b)   Participation in the music programme at Sung Mass, with  St. Thomas More
Catholic Church (Ordinariate Use) at  STM/Sacré-Coeur, 381 Sherbourne, Toronto where the children’s choir would sing on a regular basis.

2.  Daily prayer according to the Ordinariate Use will be part of the programme.

3.  Christian instruction including preparation for Confirmation and First      Communion will be part of the curriculum.

We have qualified teachers and school pincipals at St. Thomas More, including those who are expert in choral music, who will offer their time and talents.  Our aim is to make this programme available to all interested families regardless of their financial situation.

To begin, we need committed families. We know the need is there and we know that we have the initial resources to begin in September 2014 with children in the Grade 3 – 6 range for the 2014 – 2015 school year. A June 2014 meeting is being planned at STM/Sacré-Cœur. We are looking to hold a public information meeting on Saturday, June 21 or 28. The date and time will be announced soon.
